Sump Pump (The FSM Solution)
A sump pump is the heart of any waterproofing system. You can collect all the water you want with a waterproofing system but if you don't evacuate it out of the home, you are going to be wet.
Unfortunately, a lot of consumers want to take a shortcut when it comes to a sump pump. A system is as only as good as the weakest leak in the chain, so if you have an inefficient sump pump, your whole waterproofing system is going to be useless. If your home happens to get roots from trees growing into your pipes that lead out to the city sewer system, which often happens in the older homes with the large trees in the yard, you will have to snake your drains every year to keep them working properly. By the time that you add up a few years of snaking, you could have bought an efficient sump pump and then you don't have to worry about the potential water backup every year.
It is definitely the wrong way to go if you want to skimp on your sump pump or completely forget about even getting one for your home. If you put a quality sump pump in, you will get quality results, (not like the ones that are under $100 at your local home improvement store)! With a sump pump, you get what you pay for. That is the reason why we will only use Wayne pumps for all our waterproofing jobs.
The biggest problem that can be seen with sump pumps is the float switch or the internal device that triggers the sump pump to turn on. New technology has been developed that is actually a sensor and not a float anymore. There are no moving parts to create a failure on the sump pump. The new technology is called the Pump Genius and is completely electronic and will not fail like the float switches do. The sensor, which is actually a mini-computer lets the sump pump know when to run and for how long to run to rid the water. This makes it more efficient and means that it will not run for unnecessary reasons, so you get a longer motor life from it and save money on your electrical bills.
Currently we use Wayne sump pumps, but we are not afraid of dropping a line for something that comes out that is much better, as a sump pump is too important to not use the best products.
With any sump pump you should also have a battery backup. The sump pump is the heart of the waterproofing system and should be where you invest your money when it comes to waterproofing. You may have to spend extra money to get a quality sump pump, but you can rest easy that any water that enters our home will be quickly taken away with no damage done. With a quality sump pump along with a battery backup, you don't have to have any worries when it storms, when you travel or about storing anything nice in your basement for fear of water damage.
